How do you choose the perfect handmade ceramic mug?

Today I’m answering a question I get all the time: How do you choose the perfect handmade ceramic mug? Before you pick one out, start with one simple question: What do you actually love to drink? Whether it’s coffee, tea, a cozy chai, or even a glass of wine—different drinks just feel better in different shapes and sizes.

The Three Essentials

When I’m looking for a mug, I focus on three main things: Volume, Balance, and Design. Handmade mugs aren't just functional; they’re personal.

1. Finding Your Capacity

Let’s talk about size. The best way to find your "sweet spot" is to look at what you already use. Take your favorite mug at home, fill it to the rim with water, and then pour that into a measuring cup.

Write that number down! Now you have a clear benchmark for what fits your daily routine perfectly.

2. Shape and Feel

Next, think about the ergonomics. Do you prefer a sturdy handle, or are you a "cup-hugger" who likes a handle-less design? Do you want a wide, open rim, or a tapered, cozy shape that keeps the heat in and feels warm in your hands?

3. Aesthetics & Safety

Only after you’ve nailed the size and shape comes the fun part: Texture and Color. This is an object you’ll touch and see every single morning, so it should be something that truly brings you joy.

But here’s a pro-tip: Always make sure your mug is food-safe. Check with the artist to ensure they don’t use lead or cadmium in their glazes. In my studio, for example, every single piece is 100% lead and cadmium-free.

A handmade mug is something you can enjoy for years. It’s not just another mass-produced object; it’s a piece where you can actually see the marks of the maker. It carries a story, a sense of value, and a lot of heart.
